WEEK 8

YOU KNOW YOU’VE MILKED IT FOR MULLY WHEN…

1. Your school produces a music video "I Gotta Feeling" – Milk it for Mully style!!! (woohoo).
2. High school kids charge their classmates a fee to take a swing at a „milk-it-mobile‟ clunker from the auto wreckers to raise money for the cause (there have got to be pictures out there!)
3. Seniors in a care home "clean", "fold" (not crush) and "give" boxes of neatly folded 2L cartons to the campaign.
4. Community members, families, businesses and kids donate $16,604 in CASH (not recycling) with still a week left to go!!!!
5. Volunteers have picked up about 350 BAGS of milk jugs from Starbucks.
6. A student has designed and sold hand-made jewelry to parents and staff during parent-teacher interviews to raise money for the campaign.
7. The community of Grande Prairie is thanked by our MP in the House of Commons in Ottawa for its efforts in the Milk it for Mully campaign.
8. The bottle blitz collects a mountain of recycling so large that it takes the depot more than a week to count it (we still don‟t know how much $...).
9. Radio stations in Grande Prairie have advertised and covered Milk it for Mully events around town for FREE!
10. A country school "lets the cows out" during the campaign to have a cow mascot guarding its collection box 24/7!

Harrys Auto Wrecking brought an old car to St. Joseph's High School, students could then pay money to take a hit at the car to raise funds for Milk it for Mully.

WEEK 7

MCF NORTH AMERICAN SAFARI FACTS AND TRIVIA…

1. The Mully Family team (27 in all) left Kenya Africa on Sept 28/09 while we still had almost summer conditions and they leave on Dec 19/09 while we are in the heart of winter.
2. Jim Biggs, a former Grande Prairie school teacher is driving the MCF team across Canada in a 47 passenger coach (apparently room for the 28 MCF team and 19 of God’s biggest baddest angels).
3. Up to this week, the choir has done 33 performances in Ontario. According to the bus driver, the only place they did not receive a standing ovation was at a local bookstore.
4. Each MCF tour child has their own winter clothing that people in Ontario donated - in fact so much was donated they have 2 winter coats each (they'll likely wear both of them as they try to adjust to our climate)
5. Monica, age 11, is the youngest member of their touring team and is in grade 6
6. Paul, age 17 is the Karate Champion in East and Central Africa including South Africa in the under 14 category.
7. Cheese, pizza, and lasagna do not agree with the Kenyan’s digestive systems!
8. When served beef stew, the kids were expecting only beef, no veggies.
9. The MCF family does not snack in between meals - but they eat LARGE portions
10. The MCF tour team will be arriving in Grande Prairie on December 3, 2009, and coming to a school near you!!!!!

10 WORST WAYS TO MILK IT FOR MULLY…

1. Set up road blocks and force people to hand over all marked dairy containers

2. Break into the land fill site at night and look for "cleaned", "crushed" containers

3. Switch to an all dairy diet – even though you are lactose intolerant

4. Steal milk from your neighbors’ fridges

5. Break up with your boyfriend because he refuses to drink milk instead Red Bull

6. Write "AB Deposit" on non-refundable containers with a red sharpie in your best handwriting

7. Have a "Milk It" theme for your birthday party and give milk containers to your friends as party favours

8. Start having "milk baths" in order to use more milk

9. "Trick" anyone who doesn’t give milk containers when you’re trick or treating on Halloween

Everyday we have wonderful people in our town that are going around collecting "milk containers" and bringing them to the depot! This campaign could not be run without our many supporters and volunteers! Our committee appreciates the sacrifice that each one is making to help make campaign this a huge success! We have over 40 volunteers alone who pick up at our different locations / just as many teachers who organize sorting and keeping track of the collection / plus hundreds of children who each day are faithful to bring in their milk containers from home!

"Top 10 BEST ways to Milk It For Mully"

1. Have a smoothie or a milk shake for an after school snack everyday in order to consume
more milk!

2. Buy a cow & bottle and sell the milk yourself! (Cow’s would make a "great" pet!)

3. Switch to an all dairy diet!

4. Rummage through restaurant trash cans to collect more milk containers for your school!
(Only recommended for the very dedicated Milk It Fans!)

5. Make a sign for your lawn that says you’re "Milk’in it for Mully!"

6. Get grandparents and other relatives to give you their milk containers. (Kateri Mission
students started this idea!)

7. Dress as a cow for Halloween and collect milk containers instead of candy.

8. Have your parents take you to Starbucks for frappes everyday so that Starbucks has
more milk containers to give.

9. Bring a dump truck full of milk containers and pop cans on November 7th to the Centre
2000 parking lot for the Milk it Bottle Collection Blitz! (A sure way to increase your

The “Milk It For Mully” Campaign will be holding a “Bottle Collection Blitz” on November 7th, 2009 from 10:00am – 4:00pm in the Centre 2000 Parking Lot.

All refundable recycling will be accepted and can be dropped off at the Centre 2000 parking lot to go towards raising funds to drill a well for the Mully Children’s Family in Kenya.

How To Crush a Milk Container With a Vehicle

It may seem like a simple enough thing to do, "running over a milk container with your vehicle"... However the Harms family found out that "doing it" is not so easy.

We tired setting milk containers behind our vehicle's back tire and then proceeded to "back up" over the containers. To our surprise the vehicle just pushed the containers down the street it never "crushed" them like we hoped.

Notice how the containers are still there after backing up!

So, here is how to CRUSH your milk containers with your vehicle:

1) Put your containers in a plastic bag. (this is how the vehicle tires will be able to "grab" onto the containers and insure that it will crush them)

2) Place plastic bag filled with milk containers behind the back tire. Make sure part of the plastic bag is very close to the back tire so it "grabs" the plastic first.

3) Proceed to "back up"

4) Check out the "damage"!!!!

I am always amazed at how often we hear from community members about what has been happening with the campaign....

I received an email from one of our schools teachers one day thanking us for the campaign and how it has impacted her students:

"It is our pleasure to be part of this initiative. As a teacher, when I have my students become involved in a service project, I want them to become involved with their hands, heads and hearts - not just mindlessly going through the motions. The students and I have been significantly touched by the MCF and want to make a positive difference. " St. Gerard teacher

I have been informed as well from a Rotary Member that high school students came by on their lunch break to "pitch" the Milk It For Mully campaign! Wow, that is humbling that the youth of our town would take it upon themselves to go out and spread the word.

I spoke with a grandmother in town and her children attend Kateri Mission. Kateri has a competition going on "in house" between the grades to see which grade can bring in the most recycling. This ladies grandchildren were even petitioning her to have her milk containers to bring to school to improve their grades chances of winning.

All the stories that come in our a huge encouragement to us and a reminder that our kids are learning some very important lessons early in life. That it is better to give than to receive. They are learning that it is better to band together for a common cause and see "big" things happen with little resources.

My husband just lost his job due to the economic downturn and yet we are being reminded that even when we as a nation are going through rougher times we can still have a thankful and generous spirit, and count our blessings.

Milk It Bulletin Week 3

WEEK 3

TOP 10 Cool (or not-so-cool) ways to take your milk containers to school…

1. Tie a string to the milk jug and then tie it around your neck like a necklace (definitely cool and highly fashionable!)

2. Tie a string to the jug and then tie it to the bumper of your car (cool-ish)

3. Cut out the jug handles and wear them like slippers (not-so-cool and definitely dangerous on ice)

4. Stuff several behind your jacket (not cool! If you’re going to Milk It for Mully – be BOLD)

5. Get Mom to bring them after everyone has gone to class (Cool!)

6. Fill up the inside of your friend’s car and see how many jugs and friends you can squeeze in and still see out the windshield. (Cool and Crazy!!!)

7. Make your Halloween costume out of milk cartons and wear it to school (you’ll be one cool dairy queen!)

8. Make your little sister carry them - they’re light, she can handle it (not cool – at least pay her!!)

9. Fill up your hockey bag with milk jugs and take them on the bus (Cool as always – except now your bag will smell better!!!)

10. And of course, you could …Tie your bags to the side of your cow and walk her down the street to your school (A police escort would be the Coolest EVER!!!!!)

P.W.A. Milk It For Mully Kick-Off!

Our committee had the awesome privileged this last Tuesday to be apart of Peace Wapiti Academy's kick-off for the Milk It For Mully campaign at their school.

The interact group at P.W.A. did a great job of "pitching" the campaign to their fellow students and we were also pleased with the support from the media to come out and see what we have been presenting in the schools.

It was under the leadership of P.W.A. and Louis Chabot that our committee first heard about the Mully Children's Family last April at the Crystal Centre Fundraising Gala. We felt called to support Charles and his work with the orphans at that event.

Now it was our turn to thank the students at Peace Wapiti Academy for their work last year and to inform them how their influence started our group. We petitioned them again to use their influence as the youth of our city to impact the world for good. To band with us and support the Mully Children's Family one more time to save their youth's lives by providing water.

A lot of people want to write off our youth and say that they are self absorbed and unwilling to get involved, but our committee has found that nothing could be farther from the truth. Each school that we have been in has overwhelmed us with how much the kids of our town want to reach out to a hurting world and make a difference.

Each contribution may be small (just 25 cents for one milk jug) but I believe that the Lord will provide the harvest at the end of this campaign and show us that together we are stronger and that with His help we can over come. We have faith that as we do our part He will do His part to take care of the nations.

1. Drop a math textbook on it

2. Use a sledge hammer to smash it

10 Things you probably don’t know about Mully Children’s Family (MCF)

1. Charles Mulli, the founder of MCF, has 8 biological children as well as 2013 adopted children;

2. Charles Mulli, once an abandoned orphan in the streets of Kenya, became a millionaire who gave all of his possessions to rescue street children from the slums of Kenya;

3. Charles drives a Mitsubishi SUV;

4. MCF has a chicken farm that provides eggs and chicken for the children;

5. MCF grows French beans, maize, tomatoes, cabbage, eggplant, kale, watermelon, papaya, mango, and a variety of crops to supply a wide nutrient base for children which provides a balanced diet.

6. MCF has 5 large fish ponds – one fish pond took 2 years to dig by hand;

7. The MCF School is ranked number one in the republic of Kenya among the special schools category.

8. MCF’s karate team remains the champion of the East African Karate championships and Kenya Karate Championships.

Week 1 of our Milk It For Mully
Campaign!

Our team of five ladies are so excited to see the excitement, first hand, from our 23 schools and several churches and supporting business that are participating in this wonderful adventure we call Milk It For Mully!

A big THANK YOU to all the schools that have welcomed us in to do presentations for this campaign! We each have had a lot of fun engaging with the students.

The five ladies that make up this fabulous team are: Natasha Harms, Margaret Friesen, Chantal Dyrkach, Chrisy Harms & Michelle Warkentin. Just ordinary citizens desiring to impact our community and our world for good.

In our Grande Prairie community we are collecting milk containers to raise money for the Mully Children's Family. They are an orphanage in Kenya, Africa that is facing a severe drought and they need help to raise the funds to drill a bore hole. Our campaign that started September 28th and runs for 8 weeks to Novermber 20th, 2009 will endeavor to raise $25,500.00 to go towards drilling one bore hole.

Currently MCF is trucking in water to feed their 2,013 children as well as take care of surrounding community members who are also in need.

We hope that the process will be smooth and that the students of Grande Prairie and area will have fun.

We have added a fun interactive bulletin for the kids to discover each week to add some interest to the campaign. This week’s bulletin contains some trivia that the kids might find interesting. At the bottom of the bulletin, is “Next Week’s Bulletin…”topic. This gives students a chance to e-mail us with their answers for next week’s bulletin. Each week we will post some of the interesting answers we receive as that week’s top ten. We will put the student’s name and school behind each submission. There will be a total of 8 bulletins – one for each week of the campaign so hopefully each school’s submissions will have a chance to be posted!

We ask that each of you PRINT the bulletin and post it above your collection box. If your students go onto your school website, you may want to post it there as well. Feel free to duplicate or print as many copies as you like to give your students a chance to participate. Or you can have your students check us out at our blog.
